What usually goes wrong with a Ford Mondeo?

Known faults reported by owners, mechanics and UK buying guides, in our own words. Most apply to certain years or engines only, so check which the car has.

  • Timing belt that runs in oil (1.0 EcoBoost)

    Cars registered 2012–2022 · 1.0 petrol (EcoBoost and non-turbo)

Ford’s 1.0 three-cylinder petrol uses a timing belt that runs in the engine oil on most cars. If oil changes are late or the wrong oil is used, the belt breaks down and sheds rubber that blocks the oil supply, which can wreck the engine. Some later cars have a timing chain instead: a Ford dealer can tell you from the VIN. Ford’s change interval is 10 years or 150,000 miles, and the belt isn’t covered by warranty.

At the viewing: Ask for a full service history with the right oil, and when the belt was changed. An oil-pressure warning light, a rattle or a rough idle are warning signs.

  • Clutch pressure plate recall (1.0 and 1.5 petrol)

    Cars registered 2015–2022 · 1.0 and 1.5 petrol, built 30 Jun 2016 - 30 May 2018

Cars with the 1.0 or 1.5 petrol engine built between 30 June 2016 and 30 May 2018 were recalled because the clutch pressure plate could crack. Warning signs are a burning smell, the car losing speed, and a loud bang.

At the viewing: Confirm with a Ford dealer, using the VIN, that the recall has been done. Watch for clutch slip or a burning smell on the test drive.

  • 12V battery fire-risk recall

Cars registered 2015–2022 · Cars built up to 11 Feb 2019

Cars built from the start of production up to 11 February 2019 were recalled for a battery wiring problem that could cause a fire in extreme cases. The fix is a new fused wiring loom.

At the viewing: Confirm the recall has been done. Look for scorching or non-original wiring around the battery.

  • Adaptive LED headlights could cut out

Cars registered 2015–2022 · Adaptive LED headlights, built up to 22 Dec 2015

On early cars built up to 22 December 2015 with the optional adaptive LED headlights, a software bug could turn the headlights off without warning. Ford dealers update the software for free.

At the viewing: If the car has adaptive LED lights, ask whether the software update was done and test the lights.

  • Oil pump belt that runs in oil (2.0 EcoBlue diesel)

Cars registered 2018–2022 · 2.0 EcoBlue diesel (most Ford 2.0 diesels from about 2018)

The 2.0 EcoBlue diesel drives its oil pump with a belt that runs in the engine oil. As it wears it can shed rubber and cut oil pressure, which can wreck the engine. Ford has shortened the change interval on the Transit to 6 years or 100,000 miles.

At the viewing: Ask when the oil pump belt was last changed, and watch for an oil-pressure warning light.

  • Brake assist recall (early 2.0 TDCi)

    Cars registered 2008–2009 · 2.0 TDCi built Nov 2008 to Mar 2009

2.0 TDCi diesels built between November 2008 and March 2009 were recalled because brake assistance could drop while the engine warmed up.

At the viewing: Use the GOV.UK vehicle recall checker or ask a Ford dealer to check the VIN.

  • Heavy or uneven power steering

    Cars registered 2007–2014

Power steering problems, often from a blocked filter, can make the steering heavy or the assistance uneven.

At the viewing: Turn the wheel lock to lock while parking and at low speed. It should feel smooth and evenly light.

  • Air-con compressor clutch recall

    Cars registered 2015–2022 · Cars built 1 Sep 2014 - 20 Apr 2018

Cars built between 1 September 2014 and 20 April 2018 were recalled because the air-con compressor clutch could fail. Ford fits a new clutch.

At the viewing: Run the air-con and make sure it blows cold. Confirm the recall status.

  • Cracked oil sump from overheating

    Cars registered 2015–2022 · Cars built 19 Sep 2014 - 28 Sep 2015

On cars built between 19 September 2014 and 28 September 2015, the oil sump could crack if the engine overheated badly. Ford released software that spots overheating sooner.

At the viewing: Look under the car for oil leaks and ask whether the software update was done.

  • Air-con condenser failure

    Cars registered 2007–2014

The air-conditioning condenser was a common failure; many were replaced under warranty.

At the viewing: Run the air-con on its coldest setting. It should blow cold within a minute or two.

  • Windows and central locking playing up

    Cars registered 2007–2014

Electric windows can open by themselves after the car has been left locked, and the remote locking can be temperamental. New key batteries sometimes fix it; a new coded key costs around £150.

At the viewing: Lock and unlock several times with the remote and check every window closes fully.
