Vauxhall Astra common problems and MOT failures

What goes wrong on a used Vauxhall Astra, year by year: known faults from UK buying guides, the parts flagged at MOT more than on other cars (from 1,920,447 MOTs done during 2023–2025), and what to check before you buy one.

The 1983 Vauxhall Astra

Our MOT figures start with cars first registered in 1990. There are no known faults on record for this year in the UK buying guides we use, so the rest of this page covers the Vauxhall Astra as a whole.

What to check on a 1983 car
  • Rust and structure

Look underneath at the sills, floor, chassis rails and jacking points. Rust in the structure costs far more to fix than paint bubbles.

  • MOT-exempt isn’t roadworthy

Cars over 40 don’t need an MOT, but they must still be safe. A voluntary MOT or a specialist inspection is worth the money.

  • Paperwork

Old MOT certificates, bills and restoration photos show how it has been looked after. Check the logbook matches the car’s VIN and engine number.

  • Originality

Changes from standard affect value and insurance. Ask what has been replaced or modified.

  • Insurance

Classic insurance is often cheaper but may limit mileage and use. Get a quote before you buy.

Other years

Most years have their own guide. The year is when the car was first registered (it’s on the logbook, or check the reg below).

What usually goes wrong with a Vauxhall Astra?

Known faults reported by owners, mechanics and UK buying guides, in our own words. Most apply to certain years or engines only, so check which the car has.

  • Timing belt and water pump

Cars registered 2004–2009 · Engines with a timing belt

Where fitted, the timing belt needs changing every 40,000 miles or the engine can be wrecked, and a failing water pump can damage the engine.

At the viewing: Ask for invoices for the timing belt and water pump.

  • Rattle at idle (1.4 turbo)

    Cars registered 2010–2014 · 1.4 turbo petrol

A knock or rattle at idle on the 1.4 turbo usually comes from loose timing chain guide bolts.

At the viewing: Listen to the engine at idle with the bonnet up.

  • Timing belt that runs in oil (PureTech petrol)

    Cars registered 2022–2026 · 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrol

The 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech petrol engines use a timing belt that runs in the engine oil (a “wet belt”). It can break down early and shed rubber that blocks the oil supply, which can wreck the engine. Some also burn too much oil. Stellantis now covers earlier engines for belt and oil-burning problems for up to 10 years or 112,000 miles, as long as the car has been serviced on schedule.

At the viewing: Ask for a full service history showing the right oil, and when the belt was last checked or changed. Check the oil level on the dipstick, and that no oil-pressure or engine warning light stays on.

  • Brief loss of power with a metallic noise

    Cars registered 2015–2021 · 1.0 petrol and 1.6 diesel

The 1.0 petrol and 1.6 diesel can briefly lose power with a metallic noise. On diesels, a faulty oil pressure sensor is one cause.

At the viewing: Drive it for 20 minutes or more. Any sudden dips in power or engine warning lights are a reason to ask questions.

  • Exhaust smell in the cabin (diesel)

    Cars registered 2015–2021 · Diesel

A badly fitted clamp between the particulate filter and turbo can let exhaust fumes into the cabin.

At the viewing: Sit in the car with the engine running and the fan on. Any exhaust smell needs fixing before you buy.

  • 1.9 diesel problems

    Cars registered 2004–2009 · 1.9 CDTi diesel

The 1.9 diesel is the least reliable engine, with engine problems and smoke.

At the viewing: Look for smoke when you accelerate hard and check for warning lights.

  • Clutch judder

Cars registered 2004–2009 · Manual gearbox

Both petrol and diesel cars can be hard to pull away smoothly. Dealers can fit modified parts.

At the viewing: Pull away gently a few times.

  • Worn front suspension bushes

Cars registered 2004–2009 · All engines

The front suspension bushes can wear quickly.

At the viewing: Listen for knocks over bumps.

Source: What Car?: used Vauxhall Astra (2004-2010) reliability

  • Water in the body control unit

Cars registered 2010–2014 · All engines

Water can get into the body control unit, causing non-starting, locking, horn or wiper faults, sometimes all at once.

At the viewing: Try the locks, horn and wipers, and look for damp in the passenger footwell.

Source: Haynes: Vauxhall Astra Mk6 common problems

  • Seized gear cables and clutch trouble

Cars registered 2010–2014 · Manual gearbox

Poorly sealed gear cables can seize in cold, wet weather, and the clutch can fail to disengage. Fixing it means taking the gearbox out.

At the viewing: Try every gear, and check the clutch frees properly.

If it needs doing: Clutch replacement, about £250–£600. ClickMechanic

3 more known faults
  • Front suspension creak

    Cars registered 2015–2021

A worn lower arm bush makes a creak over speed bumps.

At the viewing: Drive slowly over a speed bump and listen at the front.

Source: Haynes: Vauxhall Astra K common problems

  • Creaking clutch (1.4 turbo manual)

Cars registered 2015–2021 · 1.4 turbo petrol, manual

A vibrating clutch pipe can creak loudly when you use the clutch.

At the viewing: Press and release the clutch a few times and listen.

If it needs doing: Clutch replacement, about £250–£600. ClickMechanic

  • Electrical faults

Cars registered 2004–2009 · All engines

The instrument cluster can give false readings and electric windows can fail.

At the viewing: Try every window and watch the gauges.

Questions to ask the seller before buying a Vauxhall Astra

Ask before you travel to see it. A seller who knows the car will have answers, and receipts.

  1. When were the timing belt and water pump last changed, and is there an invoice?
  2. Has any timing chain work been done?
  3. When was the timing belt last checked or changed, and has it had the right oil at every service? Is the car still within Stellantis’ extended PureTech cover?
  4. Has the body control unit been replaced?
  5. Has the clutch or gearbox had any work?
  6. Any recent work on the coil springs? (Flagged at MOT 2.5× as often on the Vauxhall Astra as on other cars the same age.)
