What to check on a 1996 car
  • MOT history

Check the reg below: its MOT history shows what has been failed or advised, and whether the mileage adds up.

  • Service history

Look for regular servicing and receipts for big jobs like a cambelt or clutch.

  • Finance and write-offs

MOT records don’t show outstanding finance or insurance write-offs. A history check does.

  • Test drive

Listen for knocks over bumps, check every warning light goes out, and make sure the gears and brakes feel right.

Other years

Most years have their own guide. The year is when the car was first registered (it’s on the logbook, or check the reg below).

  • Worn clutch and gearbox from town driving

A life of town driving wears the clutch, and notchy gear changes can mean an abused gearbox.

If it needs doing: Clutch replacement, about £250–£600. ClickMechanic

  • Blocked DPF (1.3 diesel)

At the viewing: Ask how the car's been used and check the oil isn't above the top mark.

If it needs doing: DPF clean or regeneration, about £160–£500. ClickMechanic

  • Battery monitoring wiring recall (built Sept 2017 to May 2019)

    Cars registered 2017–2019 · Built 2017 to 2019

Some cars built 8 September 2017 to 15 May 2019 have battery monitoring wiring that can chafe and needs checking. Otherwise few mechanical problems are reported.

At the viewing: Ask a Ford dealer whether the recall applies and was done.

  • Poor accident repairs and rust

Cars registered 2009–2016 · All engines

Scraped bumpers are common, and cheap accident repairs can rust.
